Foreigners settling in the Netherlands are very keen to learn Dutch thoroughly. The fact that Dutch is, in some ways, quite different from other languages is one of the reasons why Dutch is not so easy to learn. The sentence structure is almost always not quite what you expect it to be, there is a huge list of irregular verbs, the little word er has eight different functions, there is a large number of verbs with fixed prepositions, pronunciation is unfamiliar and there is an almost endless vocabulary. On top of that, the Dutch have a habit of expressing themselves in colourful figurative speech, making the meaning not always directly clear.
Understanding the language
Of course, it is not impossible to learn Dutch! A professional teacher can show where the problems are in Dutch, and give you an insight into the structure of a sentence, so you know where the pitfalls are. You also get material appropriate to your language level to strengthen the foundation of each lesson and to give your course shape and structure. Of course, you have to work hard yourself during the course, but with a little good will, enough time for study and a conscious effort to integrate into your language environment you will gain control over the Dutch language.
